Understanding tattoo aftercare

Caring for a new tattoo helps protect its color and detail while it heals. Whether your artist recommends a protective bandage or a traditional approach, steady aftercare makes all the difference.

Using Tagaderm or Saniderm bandages

Protective bandages create a breathable barrier while your tattoo heals. Follow your artist’s recommendation for how long to wear it, which is often five to seven days. Avoid soaking the tattoo and keep it out of direct sunlight while the bandage is on.

After removing the bandage, gently wash the tattoo with mild soap, pat it dry with a clean towel, and apply a fragrance-free moisturizer as directed.

Caring for your tattoo without bandages

Wash your tattoo with lukewarm water and mild soap two or three times a day. Always wash your hands first, then pat the area dry with a clean towel and apply a thin layer of tattoo aftercare ointment or fragrance-free lotion.

Avoid picking at scabs and let the tattoo heal naturally. Keep it out of direct sunlight and avoid excessive moisture, including swimming and soaking in bathtubs.
